PRIMARY SCHOOL EXTENSION

The brief from the Board of Management (BOM) was to refurbish, re-organise and extend their existing national school. The school required 4 no. additional classrooms and a large General Purpose (GP) room.

Given the site constraints there was limited space to accommodate a single storey extension without adversely affecting the size of the existing play areas. The Department of Education (DOE), therefore, allowed the school to build a two storey extension and associated lift.

The site is on a severe slope with the playing field almost on the same level as the first floor classrooms. In order to comply with Fire Safety we had to provide an alternative means of escape from the first floor classrooms. The metal bridge linking the first floor classrooms to the playing field doubles as the alternative means of escape and became a cost effective way of dealing with the issues presented by the site constraints.
