Kilkenny Social Housing

This 22-unit social housing development in a rural village in Kilkenny is conceived as a contemporary rural neighbourhood, drawing on traditional vernacular forms while delivering a low-rise, high-density residential scheme. The design prioritises dignity, clarity, and long-term quality, creating a cohesive streetscape that feels rooted in place and scale.

The architecture echoes familiar rural typologies through simple pitched roof forms, gabled elevations, and a strong sense of rhythm along the street. These traditional references are reinterpreted in a modern manner, resulting in a calm, ordered composition that integrates comfortably with its surroundings. The development comprises a mix of terraced houses, maisonettes, and apartments, carefully arranged to maximise density while maintaining a domestic scale.

A key principle of the scheme is the provision of own-door access to all homes, reinforcing independence, legibility, and a sense of ownership for residents. This approach avoids shared internal circulation and supports a more traditional street-based living environment, where entrances and frontages contribute positively to the public realm.

Landscape and public realm are integral to the design, with clearly defined pedestrian routes, soft green edges, and planted spaces enhancing the quality of the streetscape. The development achieves high residential density without reliance on height, demonstrating how thoughtful planning and design can deliver efficient and contextually sensitive social housing.
